Mark Arm, vocalista e guitarrista, é um dos responsáveis pelo surgimento do estilo. Ao lado de um amigo de escola, o também guitarrista Steve Turner, formou o Green River – lendário grupo que trazia em sua formação Stone Gossard e Jeff Ament. Os garotos eram amantes dos riffs fantasmagóricos do Black Sabbath, mas as limitações técnicas os aproximavam mais dos três acordes do punk rock. Em 1987, o grupo entraria para a história ao gravar pelo selo Sub Pop o que se tornaria a pedra fundamental do grunge: o EP Dry As Bone.
Com a saída de Stone Gossard e Jeff Ament, que mais tarde formariam o Pearl Jam, Arm e Turner recrutaram o baixista Matt Lukin, (que tocara com os Melvins e que futuramente seria homenageado pelo Pearl Jam, em “Lukin”), e o baterista Dan Peters.
Inspirados pelo filme Mudhoney (1965), de Russ Meyer, os músicos do Green River passaram a atender por um novo nome.
Em 1988, a banda assina um contrato com o selo Sub Pop e lança seu primeiro álbum, o visceral Superfuzz Bigmuff, o nome, que remete aos pedais de efeitos utilizados por Jimi Hendrix, MC5 e Stooges, já diz tudo. É o som do Mudhoney em seu estado mais bruto, com Mark Arm e Steven Turner, detonando suas guitarras pra lá de sujas em clássicos com “Touch Me I’m Sick”, “Sweet Young Thing Ain’t Sweet No More”, “You Got It” e a estupenda versão de “Halloween” do Sonic Youth, Superfuzz Bigmuff é até hoje um dos discos mais vendidos do selo.
Com o estrondoso sucesso de “Smells Like Teen Spirit” do Nirvana, em 1991, o mundo abriu suas portas para o som de Seattle. Contudo, somente com o disco Piece Of Cake, de 1992, que o Mudhoney saiu do underground, impulsionado pela tosqueira de “Suck You Dry”.
A despeito do pioneirismo grunge, o Mudhoney nunca teve o sucesso comercial alcançado pelos chapas do Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden ou Alice In Chains. A banda ganhou notoriedade justamente por caçoar do modismo que invadiu a América depois do grunge, termo que tem origem na própria banda. Reza a lenda que em um fanzine da época, Mark Arm teria empregado o termo ‘grungy’ para descrever o som do Mudhoney. Este termo ele já teria ouvido. Assim começou-se a falar em grunge.
